A Matching Grant Project for the EBCRC (Eye Bank Coordination and Research Centre) with the R.I. District 7620.
India has a large number of corneally blind people, and an aggressive eye donation campaign over the last two decades, has still not brought in the desired results. Most eye banks in Mumbai send the eyeballs removed, to the ECBRC. EBCRC was set up by the International Federation of Eye and Tissue Banks, Baltimore, USA. At EBCRC, all the eyeballs are examined and graded as per International Standards.
The corneally blind persons have to register their names through a recognized surgeon, who needs to submit a form giving necessary details. The EBCRC then issues the suitable cornea.
The smile from the recipients when their eyesight is restored and the gratitude to the donors who made it all possible are the most valuable emotions, but the role that EBCRC play is little known.
The Rotary Club of Bombay Worli had done a U.S.D. 50,000 matching program to supply special equipment like 2 Laminar Air Flow equipment, autoclave, Slit Lamps as also a fully fledged Training Centre.
Besides the above we regularly conduct Cataract Detection Camps, and free cataract surgeries for those detected at these in nearby villages and suburbs.
